Why Is Pasture-Raised Chicken So Juicy?

The first few times I cooked one of our chickens, I was convinced I had undercooked it.

It was that juicy.

I’d check it with my thermometer, and every single time it was fully cooked 165°F. I wasn’t used to chicken holding onto that much moisture. I even cooked it to 170°F, you know, just to be sure.

Then our customers started saying the exact same thing. One of the comments we hear most often is:

“I couldn’t believe how juicy it was.”

So why is that?

It Starts Long Before It Reaches Your Kitchen

At Fluffy Butt Farms, our Freedom Ranger chickens are raised on pasture and moved regularly to fresh grass.

They spend their days scratching, pecking, exploring, dust bathing, and doing all the things chickens naturally do.

They also receive a balanced NON-GMO feed to support healthy growth.

It’s a different lifestyle than chickens raised entirely indoors, and that difference carries all the way to your dinner table.

Time Makes a Difference

Another reason is simply time.

Freedom Rangers take longer to reach processing weight than conventional meat chickens.

That slower growth gives muscles more time to develop naturally.

The result isn’t necessarily a completely different chicken—it’s simply a different eating experience.

Why Juiciness Matters

One of the biggest mistakes people make with any chicken is overcooking it.

Because our chickens are naturally juicy, I found myself second-guessing my thermometer.

I kept thinking,

“There’s no way this is done yet.”

It was.

Now I trust the thermometer instead of the texture.

Cook your chicken to an internal temperature of 165°F, then let it rest for a few minutes before cutting into it.

You might be surprised by just how much juice stays in the meat.

Every Chicken Is a Little Different

Since our chickens are raised outdoors, you’ll probably notice they’re not identical.

Some birds are a little larger.

Some have slightly darker meat.

Some have more yellow skin than others.

That’s one of the things I actually enjoy about raising real food.

Nature doesn’t believe in copy and paste.

From Our Freezer

Whether you’re choosing a whole chicken, bone-in breasts, thighs, wings, or drumsticks, every one of our Freedom Rangers is raised on pasture and moved regularly to fresh grass.

If you’re used to grocery store chicken, don’t be surprised if your first reaction is the same as mine:

“Wait… is this actually done?”

Check your thermometer.

Then enjoy one of the juiciest chickens you’ve ever eaten.
